A 2025 study on spearmint and PCOS (recently changed to PMOS, or Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome) gives us another interesting clue about how this familiar herb may interact with hormone and metabolic changes.
Researchers studied female rats with PCOS-like symptoms. They found higher testosterone, insulin resistance, unhealthy changes in blood fats, and signs of inflammation and oxidative stress. The rats were then given spearmint extract or carvone, a natural compound found in spearmint. Both treatments improved several of these changes.

The study was done in animals, so more research is needed to know whether the same effects happen in women.
Still, these findings add to earlier human research suggesting that spearmint tea may have anti-androgen effects. In one small study, women with PCOS (now called PMOS) who drank spearmint tea twice daily for 30 days had lower free and total testosterone.
If you’re newly navigating PCOS or PMOS, small daily habits can be a comforting place to start. 💚
